Shy Garden Eel

Heteroconger fugax

Shy Garden Eel

This garden eel lives anchored tail first in its burrow, swaying from sandy and muddy bottoms around ten to thirty metres to pick plankton from the current. Whole colonies stand together, and at the slightest approach every eel slides backward into its hole. It can reach over seventy centimetres but holds its head steady just above the sand.
