A strange cross between a shark and a ray, with a flattened front, raised ridges of thorns over its head and back, and a powerful sharklike tail. It patrols coastal sand, mud and coral reefs, sometimes hanging in the water column, crushing crabs, prawns, shellfish and bottom fish with broad plated teeth. Once common, it is now critically endangered and bears live young.
