A slim, silvery sand lance of the northwest Atlantic that dives into sandy bottoms to hide and rests buried when not feeding. Schools work offshore in salty water, taking copepods and other small crustaceans and worms. It grows to about twenty five centimetres and is a key meal for many larger fish, seabirds and whales.
