Named for the golden band between its eyes, the gilthead seabream haunts seagrass beds, sandy bottoms and the surf zone, moving into brackish lagoons in spring. It crushes shellfish such as mussels and oysters with strong jaws, and ranges from the surface down to about 150 metres.
