This squid fills the cold North Atlantic in huge numbers and feeds whales, seals, and seabirds, making it a cornerstone of the food web. The young hunt copepods and other small drifters near the surface, while adults sink toward the deep, ranging down to roughly 2,700 metres. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
