This slender eel shaped fish lives in a Y shaped burrow it digs in soft mud, often in fifty metres of water or more, and is thought to guard its eggs down in the tunnel. It feeds on small crustaceans, worms, brittle stars and shellfish, and spawns in winter once it reaches about three years old.
