Its blind side is often as dark as the eyed side, and rough star shaped scales stud the skin of the starry flounder. It moves between shallow estuaries and rivers in summer and deeper water in winter, sometimes pushing far upstream, and feeds on crustaceans, worms and small molluscs. It grows close to a metre.
