The blueback shad runs between sea and freshwater, schooling in coastal water up to 200 kilometres offshore and ascending rivers and estuaries to spawn. It feeds on small fishes, copepods and shrimps, reaches about 40 centimetres, and may winter near the bottom out from the coast.
