A broad, warty, flat headed fish of shallow inshore bottoms, the oyster toadfish hunkers among wrecks, jetties and litter and tolerates water too foul for most fish. The male grunts and hums to call females to his nest, where he guards the eggs. Its hardy nature has made it a common laboratory animal, and its sharp spines can deliver a venomous jab.
