A silver sliver no longer than a finger, this deep sea hatchetfish carries rows of light organs along its belly that erase its outline against the faint glow from above. It rises toward the surface to feed on copepods at night and drops back into darkness by day, spending most of its life between roughly fifty and six hundred metres.
