Built like a rigid box of bony plates, the buffalo trunkfish can only flutter its fins to move, grazing seagrass beds and reef rubble for snails, crabs, worms and tunicates. It is prized as food across the Caribbean, though it carries the risk of ciguatera poisoning. It keeps to water shallower than fifty metres.
