Strong fused jaws let the checkered puffer crush bivalves, snails and other hard shelled invertebrates on seagrass beds and in tidal creeks. It avoids coral reefs and rarely schools, hiding in the sand when startled, and its flesh is poisonous to eat. It grows to nearly 40 centimetres.
