Few fish tolerate as much as the mummichog, which lives in salt marshes and tidal creeks and shrugs off swings in salinity, temperature and oxygen that would kill most others. It homes back to its own stretch of marsh, and will climb out of a tide pool to find better water when conditions turn foul. It grows only to about the length of a hand.
