A solitary, wary grouper of rocky reefs that grows to around 65 centimetres and is hard to get close to. Crabs make up most of its diet, but on Ascension Island it preys on young triggerfish and even hatchling sea turtles. Its flesh is good eating, though it has been linked to ciguatera poisoning.
