Big eyes, a reddish body and the ability to make grunting sounds mark this nocturnal reef fish. By day the squirrelfish hides in crevices and under coral ledges; at night it moves out over sand and grass beds to hunt crabs and other small crustaceans. It has been linked to ciguatera poisoning when eaten.
