Four sharp spines run along the back of this small stickleback, which haunts weedy bays and backwaters and will push into brackish and even fresh water. It feeds along the bottom, pipetting up diatoms, worms and tiny crustaceans, and the male builds a nest that he guards and fans with fresh water until the eggs hatch.
