Eighteen spines bristle from the head of this coastal sculpin, a bottom hugger of harbours and shallows that grows to roughly 46 centimetres. It withdraws to deeper water in winter and tucks its eggs against the base of a sponge, then hunts crabs, shrimp, clams, squid and small fish across the seabed.
