A scorpionfish of deeper bottoms, the highfin scorpionfish ranges down to nearly 150 metres on the continental shelf and slope. Thick glandular tissue along the rear edge of its fin spines is thought to deliver venom. It sits camouflaged on the bottom and reaches about thirty three centimetres.
