Wrymouth
Cryptacanthodes maculatus
- Group: Other
- Typical depth: 1–110 m
- Max size: 97 cm
- For divers: safe
The wrymouth digs long burrows through soft mud, where its upturned mouth and eyes set high on the head make sense for a fish that spends its life half buried. It feeds on the amphipods, worms, shrimp and small fish that pass through its tunnel system. It grows to nearly a metre yet is rarely seen out in the open.
