The fat sleeper haunts brackish marshes, muddy ponds and mangrove channels, and pushes up into fresh water in the lower reaches of rivers. It handles a huge range of salinity and tends to rest on the bottom, which is how its family earned the sleeper name. It can reach about seventy centimetres.
