Large mutton snappers haunt rocks and coral while the young grow up over sandy seagrass flats, often in clear water around islands. They gather in small groups by day that scatter at night to hunt fish, shrimp, crabs and octopus down to about 95 metres. There have been reports of ciguatera poisoning, and the species is Near Threatened.
