The stinker sponge earns its name from the sharp, garlicky smell it gives off when handled, a chemical defence that keeps most predators away. Massive lumps grow on reefs while flatter, more lobed forms spread across quiet inshore bottoms, sediment and seagrass beds, from the shallows to around a hundred metres.
