A red encrusting sponge of shallow Caribbean reefs, it spreads as a thin crust over dead coral, mollusc shells and the stems of sea fans. In cryptic, shaded spots it stays flat against the rock, but it also takes hold on hard bottoms and in mangrove ponds.
