This sculpin spends summer in the middle reaches of rivers over cobbles and gravel, then drops downstream in autumn. Its young hatch in the sea and migrate up into the rivers to grow, a back and forth life between fresh and salt water. Adults reach about thirty centimetres and prey on other fish.
