The Weddell seal lives farther south than any other mammal that breeds, hauling out on fast ice and diving through the pack ice of Antarctica. It plunges as deep as seven hundred metres after Antarctic cod, other fish, squid and invertebrates, and gnaws its breathing holes open through the ice with its teeth.
