The largest bivalve alive, the giant clam can grow well past a metre across and lives anchored on the reef in shallow water down to about 35 metres. It feeds partly by filtering plankton but mostly relies on algae lodged in its mantle, which paint its fleshy lips in swirls of colour. Heavy collecting has pushed it close to extinction in much of its range, and it is now listed as Critically Endangered.
