The Atlantic pearl oyster anchors itself to rocks and other hard surfaces in shallow water, sometimes turning up in rock pools between the tide marks. It filters its food from the water and, like other pearl oysters, can wall off an irritating grain inside its shell with layers of nacre to form a pearl.
