A soft leathery coral, this species spreads in broad mushroom shaped lobes across muddy coastal bottoms and turbid nearshore reefs, from the intertidal to considerable depth. By day its surface looks smooth and bare, but it pushes out a fuzz of tiny feeding polyps to gather drifting food.
