Named for the twin spirals it unfurls, the Christmas tree worm builds a chalky tube buried deep in living coral and fans out feathery crowns to breathe and filter food. The tube can reach 20 centimetres, and an individual may live more than 30 years, withdrawing in a flash at the first shadow.
