A filter feeding tubeworm that builds a hard calcareous tube in coral sand and rock crevices between 3 and 10 metres, then unfurls a spiral crown of red feathery tentacles to sieve plankton. It is sensitive to water movement and changing light, and snaps back into its tube at the slightest disturbance nearby.
