Fiddler Crab

Gelasimus tetragonon

Fiddler Crab

The male of this small shore crab carries one hugely enlarged claw that he waves to court females and warn off rivals, the other claw kept small for feeding. It lives in burrows on muddy and sandy intertidal flats, rolling little pellets of sand as it sifts out edible scraps, and will occasionally turn on its own kind.
