A tiny, almost transparent shrimp, the alamang swarms in huge numbers through estuaries and mangrove fringed waters over muddy bottoms down to about 50 metres. Drifting with the plankton it lives among, it is netted by the bucketful and is the basis of shrimp paste across much of Asia.
