By day this sea cucumber hides under rubble on reef flats, coming out to feed at night. Prod it and it shoots out long sticky white threads, the Cuvierian tubules, to tangle anything that bothers it. It reaches about 25 centimetres and stays in shallow water down to roughly 40 metres.
