Disturb this sea cucumber and it fires out sticky white Cuvierian tubules, a tangle of threads that gum up anything trying to eat it. It spends the day hidden under rubble on shallow reef flats, then emerges at night to graze the sandy bottom, swallowing surface sediment and passing it out again as it goes.
