By day the trumpet emperor rests over coral reefs, then moves out at dusk to forage across open sand, crushing hard shelled prey with strong teeth and pharyngeal plates. Adults often travel in small schools, while juveniles grow up in seagrass and mangrove shallows. It can carry ciguatera and reaches about ninety centimetres.
