The whitetail dascyllus crowds in busy aggregations above staghorn Acropora thickets and isolated coral heads, darting back to shelter among the branches at any threat. It feeds on plankton, small bottom animals and algae, and the male turns fiercely protective of the eggs in his nest until they hatch in a few days. It grows to about ten centimetres.
