This damselfish never strays far from a single head of Pocillopora or Acropora coral, darting back into the branches at any threat. It picks at filamentous algae and small bottom invertebrates across clear lagoon and seaward reefs down to about 20 metres, and a guarding male fans the eggs stuck to the rock until they hatch.
