Bold dark bars give this sergeant its barred look as it hangs over reef edges and inshore rocks in noisy aggregations. Adults feed on plankton, algae and small invertebrates and tend nests among rocks and coral ledges. Juveniles drift with floating seaweed, and the fish reaches about 20 centimetres.
