The giant mottled eel grows up in lowland rivers and upland streams, then makes an epic journey out to deep sea gullies to spawn. Its young drift back from the open ocean to estuaries and rivers as transparent glass eels. Reaching about seventy centimetres, it has been recorded down to extraordinary depths.
