Boldly speckled, this moray prowls reef flats and rocky shorelines, sometimes wriggling clear of the water to chase prey across exposed rock. It hunts small fish and crustaceans and is one of the few fishes confirmed to be a simultaneous hermaphrodite. It can reach about 140 centimetres.
