This snake eel hunts over sand and seagrass in lagoons and seaward reefs, sometimes fully out in the open as it searches for sand dwelling fish, crabs and prawns. When startled it drives its stiff pointed tail into the sand and burrows backwards in a flash. It can reach about sixty six centimetres.
