Big dark eyes mark the yellowfin soldierfish as a night feeder, and by day it tucks into caves and crevices on steep outer reef slopes. Off the Comoros it has been seen sharing deep caverns with coelacanths below 180 metres, emerging after dark to pick zooplankton from the water.
