A red and white squirrelfish of reef flats and lagoons, this fish stays singly or in small groups around coral down to about 20 metres. It hunts crabs and shrimp on the bottom, flares its boldly marked dorsal fin to startle attackers, and carries a venomous spine at the corner of its gill cover.
