The Cape gurnard walks the sandy and muddy seabed on free, fingerlike lower fin rays that double as feelers, probing for fish and crustaceans. When startled it flares broad pectoral fins like fans. A good eating fish off southern Africa, it ranges from coastal shallows down to nearly four hundred metres.
