The oriental flying gurnard spreads enormous wing shaped pectoral fins when disturbed, flashing them to startle a predator, though it does not truly fly. It walks slowly over coastal sand on the front rays of those fins, feeling out crabs, clams and small fish. Well camouflaged and unhurried, it lives down to about a hundred metres.
