The short dragonfish is a small armoured oddity that creeps over sand and silt in lagoons, seagrass beds and estuaries, using winglike pectoral fins to glide along the bottom. It probes the sediment for tiny crustaceans and worms, and periodically sheds its skin in one piece. It grows to only about ten centimetres.
