A grouper of lagoon and seaward reefs, it ambushes crabs, fishes, octopus and squid down to at least 44 metres, and turns up more often on oceanic reefs than coastal ones. It lives alone and reaches about half a metre. Like many groupers it begins life female and some later change to male.
