A heavy grouper that can pass two metres, the Malabar grouper turns up across reefs, tide pools, estuaries and mangroves from the shallows down to a hundred and fifty metres. It ambushes fish and crustaceans with a fast gulp, and like many groupers individuals can begin as females and later become males.
