This grouper lives over muddy sand and mud across a wide depth band, from a couple of metres down to around 300, and trawlers off the Kerala coast take it between 63 and 100 metres. It grows to about 55 centimetres and, like other groupers, ambushes crustaceans and fish from the bottom.
