A heavyset grouper of silty inshore reefs, it sits flat on the bottom and props itself up on enlarged fleshy pectoral fins. It hunts shrimps, crabs, worms and small fish alone, and stays in shallow water where no records exist below 50 metres. Eating one can cause ciguatera poisoning.
